The Cordell Hull Foundation for International Education is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to Cordell Hull, awarded the 1945 Nobel Peace Prize as “Father of the United Nations.” Secretary Hull served for twelve years under Franklin Roosevelt, the longest-serving Secretary of State. Embracing his goals of international peace, the Cordell Hull Foundation (CHF) has offered programs to improve relations between the U.S. and other countries, primarily through exchange, since 1951.

CHF J-1 VISA Teacher Exchange

The J-1 visa was established by the Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961. American students benefit through learning about the customs and mores of other nationalities, as well as literature and spoken language skills. Primary foreign languages represented by CHF are French, Spanish, Greek, German, Italian and Mandarin.

The Cordell Hull Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation, is active in sponsoring exchange programs for qualifying teachers from six continents. Currently, teachers hail from more than sixty countries including Argentina, Australia, Austria, the Bahamas, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Botswana, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, The Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Ecuador, England, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Mexico, Nepal, The Netherlands, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Panama, Peru, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Scotland, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Wales. After enjoying the experience of teaching in the United States on a temporary basis, program participants return home to share wonderful memories and positive feedback on American culture.

The State Department designates the Cordell Hull Foundation to sponsor J-1 non-immigrant visas, enabling qualified K-12 teachers to teach from 1-5 years, renewable annually. Click on Teacher Exchange Program for more details. CHF works directly with schools–not through attorneys or other third parties. The Foundation is not an employment agency. We do not represent teachers, nor place them. We do not allow foreign teachers to pay for cost of J-1 visa sponsorship, nor charge a fee for teacher referrals from our database. The Cordell Hull Foundation does not post a list of costs for participants, because we do not charge teachers. When schools work with us to sponsor teachers, we ask them to complete a Cost of Living Form informing foreign nationals of the general cost of living in their area for the first year.

The Cordell Hull Foundation specializes in language-immersion curricula – French, Greek, Spanish, and German – where students are taught regular subjects in the target language. We also sponsor teachers from 50 countries to teach foreign languages, ESL and other subjects.

Currently, CHF accepts applications from schools and school districts. We do not respond to inquiries from recruiters or attorneys. Teachers applying for an existing program must first read the Frequently Asked Questions  FAQ link on our website and then complete our Teacher application form which can be accessed in English or Spanish on the J-1 Visa Exchange Teacher page. CHF CHINA Teacher Exchange

Wang’s 2008 cultural exchange in the US Shanghai High School As part of the Foundation’s effort to assist American tea chers to find teaching positions, abroad, we are announcing our collaboration with the Shanghai High School International Department. The well-groomed sprawling campus, spread out over acres of gardens, walkways and buildings, is organized around subject areas such as languages, mathematics, science, and arts. Senior Teacher Zhang ZeHong is pictured at right. Academic and character standards are high. There is a waiting list of applicants to join the student body of over 2,000 students. SISTER-CITY Programs 

he Foundation facilitates several Chinese connections to encourage Chinese teachers of Mandarin and Cantonese to participate in cultural and language exchange programs in the U.S. Several worthy conduits for exchange Sister City Committees are located in Cincinatti, Maine and Charlotte.

deLesseps S. “Toni” Morrison Summer Study Program

The Foundation’s intensive Summer Studies Program in Antigua, Guatemala, aids businesspeople and teachers to rapidly become fluent in Spanish while enjoying an idyllic setting in this quaint village in Central America. CHF has documented success for learners who stay immersed in Spanish for a sustained period without reverting to English or the learner’s native language.

Cultural information is communicated throughout international schools across the U.S. where the Cordell Hull Foundation sponsors Exchange Teachers through participation in pageants, plays, readings, field trips, and other activities. Students benefit through learning about the customs and mores of other nationalities, as well as literature and spoken language skills. In most language and Baccalaureate immersion schools, fifth-grade students get the opportunity to travel to the target country, stay with host families, and participate in classes with their counterparts, then reciprocate by hosting these students when they travel to the U.S. during the school year. Primary languages represented are French, Spanish, German, and Greek.
