You may also read the concise SET-UP GUIDE for detailed instructions. Before you consider a J-1 visa exchange program, be sure to confirm with us if a teacher is qualified for a J-1 visa and read the eligibility requirements. See ELIGIBILITY.
ELIGIBILITY
To qualify, foreign teachers must:
- (1) qualify to teach in K-12 schools in country of nationality or last legal residence
(2) have two years’ full-time teaching experience
(3) be fluent in English – able to understand and speak
(4) be of good reputation and character
(5) work as a classroom teacher only full-time 32 hours/wk minimum
(6) have equivalent of 4-YR US university degree in Education or subject
(7) be currently working as a teacher in home country or country of last legal residence
(8) intend to come to the U.S. for the purpose of exchange, not work.
CANNOT:
- (9) work as a principal, intern, tutor, counselor, coach, librarian, curriculum coordinator, or any staff position other than classroom teacher 32 hours per week
(10) have worked in J-1 teacher visa status in the US during the previous 2 years
(11) work in day-care schools (except Pre-K3 and Pre-K4 for language immersion schools)
These federal laws are not flexible.

J1 Visa Teacher Exchange Fees
CHF Sponsorship fees are paid by school or district, not by teachers:
- Year 1: $1,400

- Year 2: $800
- Year 3: $400
- Year 4 & 5 (flat fee): $1,000 + State Dept $367 fee
- Year 5: Zero
Teacher or school can pay remaining costs:
J-2 Dependents upon request – not automatic
Spouse – $300/year
Child – $200/year (must be school age: 3-5 depending upon state – no toddlers)
